free ACTING workshop

Great acting isn't about saying the words right. It's about being in the moment, staying connected to your scene partner, and making choices that are alive and specific every time you step on stage. The GTW Acting Workshop is a five-week course for experienced actors who want to go deeper in the craft.

Class is capped at 10 students. Course consists of five weeks of classes (detailed below) and ends with a performance at the GTW Season Kickoff Event on July 25. Interested actors can sign up below.

7:00 - 10:00

foundations

We begin with a focus on foundational elements of the craft. This includes script work, spatial awareness, and examination of Uta Hagen's Six Questions and the core elements of Practical Aesthetics. Actors will be given a scene to analyze and also a scene to work on that will be their focus for the duration of the workshop.

7:00 - 10:00

scene work

Students will run their assigned scenes and provide background and analysis on character, choices, tactics, subtext, and physical choices.

Chekov's psychological gesture will be discussed as a tool for physical character work. Students will use course vocabulary to constructively critique their scenes and the scenes of their peers.

7:00 - 10:00

going deeper

Students run their assigned scenes adding in layers based on study, prior coursework, and discoveries.
Students will critique their work and the work of their peers.
Discussion on how to implement new tools and how to breakthrough from emotive performance to truthful performance.

jul 13

7:00 - 10:00

dialing in

Students run scenes with all added elements. Students expected to find new layers and discoveries in their work. Critiques continue and individual conversations take place to ensure clear understanding and to assist in the growth process.

jul 20

7:00 - 10:00

dress run

Students run scenes in show conditions with no stoppages. Critiques continue with more clarity on why, how, and what constitutes truthful acting. Group recap to clarify terms, concepts, and techniques and prepare for performance.

jul 25

7:00 - 10:00

showcase performance

Students will perform their scenes for a live audience at the annual GTW Season Kickoff Party.

Instructor

Micah McBay

Micah currently serves as Artistic Director for GTW. His background includes decades of experience on stage in dozens of performances ranging from musicals to plays. He has worked with and trained actors in educational settings and now community theatre. 

His influences as an acting teacher include Uta Hagen, Practical Aesthetics, Sanford Meisner, Michael Chekov, Peter Brook, Anne Bogart, and Viola Spolin. His approach is focused on releasing inhibitions both mentally and physically in order to, as Meisner said, "live truthfully under imaginary circumstances". 

In addition to directing multiple shows, he also holds a Master's Degree in Theatre from East Texas A&M University in Commerce, Texas.
